this post is like getting smacked in the face twice
i’ve been deciding whether or not i should speak about #survivingrkelly. i’m happy that many of his victims have been given public space to have their stories heard.. but i’m immensely dissapointed that it has taken this long to take this seriously. and i wonder whether or not folks would have treated him as a harmful predator had his victims been of another demographic. it makes me sad that we’ve known of his history for decades, and have continued to support his pedophilia and abuse.
i want people to understand that, supporting R Kelly simply because of his musical talent, makes you complicit in supporting rape culture and sexual violence against me, and others like me. if you love the young black women in your family, you will start the hard work of refusing to stay silent.
my heart aches for fellow survivors of sexual abuse / trauma .. please take care of yourself in this difficult time. i know how triggering much of the conversation around this documentary can be. i hear you. i am here for you. and i am healing with you.
